1. History and Cultural Heritage

Jongno-gu is the historical and cultural heart of Seoul, showcasing the city's rich heritage from the Joseon Dynasty to the present day. This area has played a crucial role since it was the center of the capital city, Hanyang, during the Joseon period. Numerous historical sites and architectural treasures can be found here.

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace: Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a symbol of Korea's history and culture, featuring important buildings like Geunjeongjeon (the main throne hall), Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion. The changing of the guard ceremony held daily in front of Geunjeongjeon is a popular attraction for visitors.
  • Changdeokgung Palace: Constructed in 1405, Changdeokgung Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beautiful garden, Huwon (Secret Garden). This palace exemplifies the harmonious blend of architecture and nature, offering a serene retreat within the bustling city.
  • Jongmyo Shrine: Jongmyo Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to the ancestral tablets of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty. The Jongmyo Jerye (Royal Ancestral Rite), held annually on the first Sunday of May, is a fascinating cultural experience featuring traditional music and rituals.

 

 

2. Culinary Delights

Jongno-gu is also a food lover’s paradise, offering a wide range of traditional Korean dishes and street food.

  • Insadong: Insadong is famous for its traditional tea houses, restaurants, and street food vendors. Try some tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), hotteok (sweet filled pancakes), and jeon (Korean pancakes).
  • Gwangjang Market: One of the oldest and largest traditional markets in Korea, Gwangjang Market is renowned for its delicious and affordable food. Must-try dishes include bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes), mayak gimbap (mini seaweed rice rolls), and sundae (Korean blood sausage).

 

 

3. Major Attractions

Jongno-gu is home to many significant cultural and historical sites.

  • Bukchon Hanok Village: This traditional Korean village is located between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. It features hundreds of hanok (traditional Korean houses) that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. Visitors can walk through the narrow alleyways and experience the architectural beauty of old Korea.
  • Insadong: Known for its antique shops, art galleries, and traditional crafts, Insadong is a cultural hub where visitors can purchase souvenirs, enjoy traditional performances, and participate in cultural activities.
  • Cheonggyecheon Stream: This modern public recreation space runs through downtown Seoul, offering a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The stream is particularly beautiful at night when it is illuminated with colorful lights.

 

 

4. Shopping and Nightlife

While Jongno-gu is steeped in history, it also offers vibrant shopping and nightlife experiences.

  • Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP): A major urban development landmark designed by Zaha Hadid, DDP is a hub for fashion and culture. It hosts various exhibitions, fashion shows, and markets. The nearby Dongdaemun Shopping Complex and Dongdaemun Night Market are perfect for night shopping.
  • Ikseon-dong Hanok Village: This trendy area combines traditional Korean houses with modern cafes, boutiques, and bars. It’s a popular spot for young people and tourists looking for unique experiences and Instagram-worthy photos.
